Escape Room Tips: How to Master Every Room

New to the world of escape rooms – or want to finally achieve a perfect success rate? With the right escape room tips, you can master almost any room. Here are the most important strategies that experienced players know – and beginners often have to learn.
1. Communication is everything
The most common mistake in escape rooms: everyone searches quietly on their own. But open communication is the key. Share every find out loud with the team. Say what you've found, what you've tried and what didn't work. Three eyes see more than two – and often the solution is in another player's head.
2. Approach things systematically
Explore the room systematically at the start. Split up: one part searches, another sorts found items. Set used items aside – this saves valuable minutes when you don't have to check the same things twice. Everything in the room has a reason. Nothing is placed randomly.
3. Use hints, don't be ashamed
Asking for hints is not a defeat – it's smart game strategy. Almost all escape rooms, including Game Over Vienna, offer a hint system. If you're stuck on a puzzle for more than 10 minutes, it's usually better to take a hint and move on than to waste valuable minutes.
4. Note down numbers, colours, patterns
Write down codes, combinations and key details immediately – even if you see no use for them yet. Often numbers you find early only become relevant later in the room. Many rooms have a notepad or whiteboard – use it!
5. Keep an eye on time, but don't stress
60 minutes sounds like a long time – and sometimes it isn't. Keep track of the remaining time, but don't let it stress you out. Panic is the biggest enemy when puzzling. Those who stay calm think more clearly and solve puzzles faster.
6. Never use force
If something doesn't work, it's not because you're not pushing hard enough. Escape rooms are never a sport. If a lock won't open or a mechanism doesn't respond, the solution is something else. Let the team outside know if you genuinely think something is broken.

At Game Over Vienna, four different rooms with increasing difficulty await you. For beginners, we recommend Orient Express or Lost City of Atlantis – both offer a fair introductory experience with a clear puzzle structure.
